Interview with the Faces
FFR Interview
As the resident journalist of Familiar Faces Radio, I thought it was time for our listeners to learn more about The Familiar Faces and our movement. If you’ve never spent time with rowdy crew, you are definitely missing out on a good time. The Familiar Faces are made up of eight members; DJ Durl, The musical genius who does more than just select songs to play. He actually studies music. Hosts; Wesley, The first artist on Familiar Faces Records, you can usually hear him singing over any song played during the show. Leon, who is known as the wildcard of the group because you don’t know if you’re going to catch his good side or his asshole side. Andre, the laid back member is often in the clouds. Quanice, the resident blogger who also knows a lot about music. If you follow her on Twitter she will usually Tweet her thoughts on music or links to the newest and hottest tracks. Mecah, who is the baby of the crew who has been described as energetic and extremely smart. And Roniquia who manages the show. Roni is also very energetic and loves to party. She is often the motivator of the group and just wants them to be GREAT. As we sat down at multiple locations at Easton Towne Center, I got a closer look at this eclectic gathering of people with a similar dream; to get the Familiar Faces movement to be bigger than just a radio show.
Tatiana; Where do you see the Familiar Faces movement going?
“We see this being more than just a radio show. We plan on taking over Columbus. ‘Familiar Faces’ will become a household name nationally. Radio will not be our only venture. It’s going to grow and branch into bigger things. Familiar Faces will be a successful entity in the entertainment industry. Hopefully we can become syndicated. “
Tatiana; What is the desired outcome of FFR?
“For the family to be happy and accomplish their dreams. Everyone is going to use their talents to become great. We intend to branch off to a music label. We’re going to be MAJOR, a positive impact. We want to change the way people think. We just want to be known as a group as well as individuals.
Tatiana; What do you plan on doing for your community?
Wesley states that we are “Breast Cancer Shawtys.” “We are currently organizing a breast cancer charity and fundraiser. Every person in the group has been impacted by the disease. We will always do a back to school event maybe even rallies to provide a great example to the youth. We just want to show them you don’t have to have tragedy to be good. We believe we have the power to influence kids. “
Tatiana; How did you guys get interested in internet radio?
“DJ Durl had a show called ‘Cadillac Wednesdays’ that gave him the idea to get his friends together to start their own show. They were approached to be recorded and it took off from there. This is our reality show.”
When asked who the funniest host is they became biased and could not give a definite answer. However don’t get caught saying something that makes no sense. DJ Durl catches everything and he will not hesitate to give you his famous “DJ Durl Blank Stare.” They are all collectively funny and often piggyback off each other for material.
Tatiana; Who is the worst host to have in the studio?
They all say Leon is the loudest in the studio and Wesley also has a habit of talking over people.
Tatiana; Who came up with the concept of FFR?
Familiar Faces is the brain child of DJ Durl. He had a dream that his crew was walking around with lettermen jackets on. They weren’t known per se’ but they all had Familiar Faces. They were always everywhere the party was.
Tatiana; How did you get the opportunity to start you own radio show?
“DPS Radio is partially owned by another DJ in Durl’s DJ group. He began by having his own hour and was eventually given the opportunity to have his own show which he quickly jumped on. “
Tatiana; How does everyone know each other?
“Roni and Wesley date. Roni and Dre have known each other since middle school. Durl, Mecah and Leon use to work with each other at a shoe store called Deveroes. Leon and Quanice have known each other for a few years threw personal contact. “
Tatiana; What are your hobbies?
Dre: "First of all I'm a dad... Then I smoke weed. Being a dad ain't no joke so that comes first."
Wes: "I smoke weed because of life. I'm also the first artist off of Familiar Face Records, I sing."
Quanice: "I like listening to music. I love music. I like blogging and getting into website design. I'm in love with music. I listen to it 24/7."
Mecah: "Listening to music. Drawing and designing things, I designed out flyer. And I go to school."
Roni: "I like to take pictures, read celebrity gossip and planning events. I also like commanding shit, making sure everything goes the way it's suppose to happen. I'm not the boss but I like to make sure everyone has what they need when they need it so they can be great. And I like to party."
Leon: "I really don't have any hobbies. I don't do nothing. I work and just be chillin. I like fashion. I kick it with these niggas all the time."
Durl: "I like researching studying and finding music. I'm always looking up comedy like delivery and jokes. There are things in my head all the time."
Tatiana; “What are your goals?”
Dre: “I just want to be a good mentor to my kids and build The Familiar Faces to an empire”
Wesley: “I want to live my life completely one hundred percent right eventually. I want to be a good father to my kids just like my father was to me. “
Quanice; “I want to love what I’m doing and become stable. I want to be able to do what I want and love.”
Mecah; “I want to be successful in whatever I choose to do whether it’s building buildings in China because I speak Chinese”
Roni: “I want to be a stylist and launch my t-shirt line.”
Leon: “I want to be MAJOR and not answer to anybody else.”
Durl: “I want to be whatever God wants me to be. I want to do His will.”
Tatiana; What is your favorite music genre?
Quanice; “Current R&B is not giving me what I need so right now Hip Hop is my favorite. But I like all types of music.”
Mecah; “I mostly listen to R&B.”
Dre: “I love R&B and rap. I really like Maroon5.”
Wesley: “I listen to everything but trailer music (music that hurts my ears.)”
Roni: “I love soul music.”
Leon: “I mostly listen to Hip Hop.
Durl: “I Love ‘90s New Jack and R&B. That’s how I start the show every week. I think it eases people into the show”
Tatiana: “What song or artist made you fall in love with music?”
Dre gave the most colorful answer by rapping a line to an old school Wu Tang song. If you want to hear the full answer you have to listen to the recorded interview.
Wesley: “Michael Jackson, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice.”
Quanice: “’Whoop Der It is!’ Tony Braxton’s ‘Secrets’ album and Brandy.”
Mecah: “Alicia Keys because I was like the only mixed kid at my school and I felt I could identify with her. Also Mary J Blige, Aaliyah and DMX.”
Roni: “All For One.”
Leon: “Billy Idol’s ‘When the Rebel yells’ my older sister first introduced me to that.”
Durl: “Michael Jackson with the curl.”
Tatiana; “What is the experience you want your listeners to take away with them after listening to the show?”
“Damn that was a good ass show!” “Those niggas are real!” “I wish the show could be on longer.”
Tatiana: “How do you feel about the current state of free radio?”
“Free radio has no variety or competition. The hosts are whack, older and repetitious. Dre says, ‘free radio really isn’t "free"...they have to abide by rules and regulations that’s not entertaining to the public because the songs they play are too repetitious and it don’t feel like radio, feels like I’m listening to a broken record that keeps repeating songs.’”
Tatiana: “How would you change the state of free radio?”
“We need to keep fighting for it. Make it more relatable. We can change it by adding straight personality and entertainment. I would keep expressing ideals to the regulators until they finally gave in and let free radio actually be free. We’ll change it by making FFR an everyday thing.”
Tatiana: “How do you feel about the current state of Hip Hop?”
Dre: “It’s coming back. I believe the Jay and Kanye cd really took it there and people will start following in their footsteps. Hip hop never left as far as fashion goes we’ll always set trends.”
Wesley: “It’s going back to a good state. A lot of the fans are being more supportive from the ground up. They’re catching the artist before they’re too big, and following them through their whole career. Nobody is trying to copy each other.”
Quanice: “It’s not where it used to be but it’s in a really good place. There are a lot of new artist that I can’t keep up, and they’re HOT. They’re putting out good music and really grinding. Ever since artist started using Twitter and YouTube, you can get the music faster. People are dropping free mix tapes every week that they put hard work into.”
Leon: “I’m glad there are no more ‘ringtone’ rappers. There are West Coast rappers that are starting to sound like East Coast rappers. I’m glad that West Coast rap is coming back. I can relate more to Biggie that 2Pac because I had the same things going on outside of my door.”
Durl: “I want it to be back fun. I want to have fun with my music. I don’t like all of the negativity. With the availability of music now you can pick your own music. Artist don’t have to be signed to get recognized.”
Tatiana: “What do you think caused the decline of quality in Hip Hop?”
“The internet and ringtones. Bubble gum rap. Everyone trying to be studio gangstas.”
Tatiana: “Why do you think Columbus artist don’t want to work together?”
Dre: “Competition. No one wants to see each other come up.”
Wesley: “There are a select few that work with each other. It’s not all hate around here. Nobody wants see anybody else make it in front of them.”
Quanice: “A lot of it has to do with our Hip Hop scene still being new. The rappers are still getting their feel. You have people on the East side putting out trap music where as other people are putting out different types of music. There are two different lanes in Columbus.”
Durl: “It’s a lot of the internet and sub tweeting. “
Tatiana: “How would you characterize your other Co-Hosts?”
On Dre: “He’s real chill and laidback. He’s an awesome father. He just be high, a true weed head. He’s a great friend, really the homie. He’s all in all a really good person.”
On Wes: “That nigga is real. He sings all the time and will find the harmony in everything. Very opinionated. And Roni thinks he’s awesome.”
On Quanice: “She’s laid back, opinionated and cool as fuck. She knows a lot of drinking games.”
On Mecah: “She’s the baby, energetic and smart as hell.”
On Roni: “She’s the motivator, energetic and loyal to her friends. She loves to party. She’s nice when she wants to be.”
On Leon: “He’s abrasive, an asshole. He’s cool but still an asshole. He’s cool. The wild card. We’ll sick Leon on you.”
On DJ Durl: “The old Durl was an asshole. He was ready at any moment to rip you to shreds and walk away. He gave no fucks. He didn’t discriminate. Now he’s so chill, relaxed and focused. He’s God fearing and ambitious.”
Tatiana: “DJ Durl, what’s the highlight of being a DJ? I often hear other DJs say you guys have the best job in the world.”
“Being able to make people have memories when they hear the music. Being able to control the party. The memories to people’s events like weddings. It CAN be the best job in the world. He lives to see a person in the crowd who gets excited for a specific song. It’s fun seeing their reactions.”
Tatiana: “If you could have any occupation in the world, what would it be?”
Dre: “Something with weed. Weedology. I want to make ways to heal people with it.”

Tatiana: “What’s playing in your car right now?”
Dre, Wesley, Leon and Durl are all playing ‘Watch The Thrown”, Roni; “Beyoncé, Ledisi, Chem and ‘Watch The Throne.” Quanice: “CiHi, Dom Kennedy, old Kanye, Jhene, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocen and Fly U.

THIS IS WHAT CAME OF IT.

AN EXCERPT FROM AN AD THAT NEVER AIRED
ITS FROM THE " THINK DIFFERENT " CAMPAIGN FT. STEVE JOBS.
" Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who think they are crazy enough to change the world…
are the ones who do."
